I approach each new painting as a new experience. The process of a meditative inquiry into my subject gradually transports me to "Child's Eye" and natural wonder. I then find I am painting intuitively, allowing the subject to tell me its mysteries.
I employ a focused state to convey detail, texture and vivid color. The profound effect of light and shadow further gives it life and substance. The attention and care I put into my painting is also my intention to give to the viewer.
I have had a life long love and appreciation for art, music, and poetry. I started painting late in life and have had no formal training.
Personally, I react to art on a visceral level .Before I started painting, I was fortunate to attend Van Gogh's exhibit in Los Angeles. I was so amazed and awed by the immediacy and emotion in his work. His paintings literally vibrated with aliveness. I wanted that ability! I began to teach myself to draw and paint. The book, "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" by Betty Edwards taught me to See. I have learned the most about painting from painting and sitting with an artwork with a slow, soft eye.
I am enchanted by art and its power to transform. I have great respect and admiration for so many artists. I have responded most to works by Kahlo, Van Gogh, Pollock, Degas, Monet, Jan Bruegel the Elder, Jan Van Eyck, Hunt, Burne-Jones, Gauguin, and I could go on!
I currently have a painting that will exhibit in September at the 5th International Women Artists of the West in Wyoming.
I just received notification that one of my paintings has been selected for display in Lincoln, Nebraska's Madonna's Rehabilitation Hospitals 2003 national juried exhibition entitled, "Kindred Spirits Celebrating the Healing Power of Pets." |
